CRISIS INTERVENTION PROGRAM         OVER

Southwest Arkansas Development Council 605 E. Haes is no longer taking applications for Crisis Intervention Program.  Funds have been depleted.

HORATIO PRESCHOOL ENROLLMENT   NOW

Horatio ABC preschool will have  enrollment for the 2008-2009 school year.  Applications may be picked up in the metal  building beside the gym.  There will be an open enrollment for the whole month of April.  Parents may come at their convenience

SEVIER CO. CLERK’S OFFICE EXTENDED HOURS          05/05-19

The Sevier County Clerk’s Office will be open for early voting for the Preferential Primary Election and Nonpartisan Judicial General Election:

Monday through Friday (May 5th -16th) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.  
Saturdays (May 10th & 17th) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  
Monday (May 19th) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Early voting is conducted at the Sevier County Clerk’s Office, in the courthouse in De Queen.  For more information about early voting, call 870-642-2852.

PRE-K REGISTRATION FOR J.T. COUNTS LOCKESBURG       5/13-5/14

Pre- K registration for J.T. Counts in Lockesburg for the summer and the 2008-2009 School Year will be held Tuesday, May 13th from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday May 14th from 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  The registration is for 4 year olds  and 5 year olds who miss the cut-off date for kindergarten.  You will need to bring your child’s birth certificate, shot records, and social security card with you.  If you would like more information, please call the pre-school and ask for Ms Sharon or Ms. Veronica at 870-289-2445 between the hours of 7:30 and 5:30 p.m.

WORK DAY AT CRYSTAL HILL CEMETERY   5/17

The Crystal Hill Cemetery located east of Wickes will have the annual Work Day on Sat., May 17.  Please bring mowers, weedeaters and other equipment needed for cleanup of the Cemetery and Church for Decoration Day May 25th.  In the event of rain, the Work Day will be postponed until May 24.  All help will be appreciated

BURN OUT SHOWER FOR VINCE AND LORI STRASNER        5/16

There will be a burn-out shower for the Vince and Lori Strasner family this Friday (May 16) at the New Hope Fire Department at 6:00 p.m. The couple and their three young children lost everything in a house fire. There will be a spaghetti supper, pie/cake walk, and burn-out shower. Please attend or call 845.8704 to make a contribution to the family.

4TH ANNUAL SEVIER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP BULL RIDING       5/17    

The 4th annual Sevier County Championship Bull Riding will be held Saturday, May 17th at the Sevier County Fairgrounds starting at 8 p.m.  Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for age 6 – 12.  This is the biggest county wide fundraiser for the Sevier County 4-H and all proceeds go to the Sevier County 4-H foundation.  A special attraction this year will be NFR act Texas Kid Rodney Hayes and the Pony Express with local 4-H member Brody Smith.  Together the two will perform multiple stunts on a variety of animals including t Brazilian Gear Bull.  For more information call 584-3013.

BENEFIT CO-ED SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT FOR CUB SCOUT PACK #54       5/17

There will be a benefit co-ed soft ball tournament held Saturday, May 17th at Dierks City Park. All proceeds will go to the Cub Scout pack #54 to attend Boy Scout camp this summer.  Entry fee is $125 per team.  For more information or to sign up call 870-784-2912.

GILLHAM VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE BAR-B-Q FUNDRAISER 5/17

The Gillham Volunteer Fire Department will have their annual bar-b-q fundraiser Saturday, May 17th from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Gillham Fire Station.   There will be an auction starting at 6:30 p.m. and live music after the auction.  Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for Children 6 to 10.  Children under the age of five will eat for free. 

RUSTY RELICS 5TH ANNUAL ANTIQUE TRACTOR SHOW     5/17

The Rusty Relics 5th annual antique tractor show will be held Saturday, May 17th from 9a .m. to 4 p.m.   All tractors are welcome, restored or right off the farm.  There will be a tractor parade, tractor games, kids activities, balloon houses, and fun for all ages, concessions will be available.  The event will be held at the home of Roger and Leslie White 5 miles west of Nashville on hwy 371 then right on hwy 355 north for 3 miles.  Watch for signs.  For more information call 870-845-2769, 845-4631, 845-2755. 

REVIVAL AT  FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH IN GILLHAM                 5/18-23

Revival services will be held Sunday through Wednesday nights, May 18-23 at First Baptist Church in Gillham.  Services Sunday night will begin at 6:00, Monday thru Wednesday night at 7:00.  There will be a different speaker each night from the Arkansas Baptist Convention.  The new pastor is Ray Brown.

DIERKS SCHOOL BOARD MEETING CHANGED              5/19

The regular meeting of the Dierks School Board has been moved to Monday, May 19th.  The meeting will be held at the High School Library at 5 p.m.    

BEN LOMOND COMMUNITY HOMECOMING   5/24

The city of Ben Lomond will celebrate their annual Homecoming/Reunion at the Ben Lomond Community Center on May 24, 2008, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  Everyone who is living in Ben Lomond, who ever lived in Ben Lomond, or ever wanted to live in Ben Lomond is invited to attend.  The meat will be provided.  Bring a covered dish and/or dessert and an appetite.

19TH ANNUAL TRI-LAKE BIG BASS TOURNAMENT               5/24

The 19th annual Tri-lakes Big Bass Festival will be held Saturday, May 24th from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Anglers will be able to fish their choice of De Queen, Dierks, or Gillham Lake.   Boat Checks will begin at 5 a.m.  Entry fee is $40 per person until May 23rd; registration fee the day of the tournament will be $45 per person.  There will be an “early late” registration held Friday, May 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the De Queen Courthouse Square for any lake.  Boat checks will be conducted at the following locations: De Queen Lake at Oak Grove at dam and Rolling Fork, Dierks will be at Jefferson Ridge and Gillham at Coon Creek and Little Coon Creek.  There will be hourly payouts per lake as well as overall big bass prizes.  Over $11,000 cash will be awarded to the winners. Countdown and hourly reports will be broadcast live on KDQN. DINO-FEST IN NASHVILLE          05/30-31

On May 30th & 31st, Nashville Parks and Recreation will be holding its annual Dino Festival.  There will be softball and baseball tournaments and a bunch of activities for kids to do.  This year there’ll be bounce houses for kids, talent shows, bands, obstacle courses, and much more.  It will be a good time for the whole family to enjoy.

SOUTHERN GOSPEL SINGING SCHOOL    6/2-13

An old-fashioned shaped-note singing school will be held June 2nd through 13th at the Old Time Missionary Baptist church, 7th & Ft. Towson in De Queen under the direction of Gene Jeffres of the Jeffress School of Gospel Music.  There will be a morning session and a night session.  For more information contact Melvin Sullivan at 642-5116 or J.P. KID’S KRUSADE AT FIRST ASSEMBLY OF GOD IN DE QUEEN                  6/1-6/4    

There will be a Kid’s Krusade held June 1st at 6p.m. and June 2nd through 4th at 6:30 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in De Queen.  Prizes will be given to every child every night.  For more information call 584-3435 or 582-2184 for more information.

2008-09 LEADERSHIP APPLICATION PACKETS ARE READY            NOW

Little River Leadership is a ten-session program that consists of the following objectives:

Identify, train, and motivate current and emerging leaders who live or work in the county.

Recruit candidates with diverse backgrounds and from representative segments of the community.

Acquaint participants with the dynamics of leadership, business, education, government, healthcare, human services, industry, chamber of commerce, and cultural and civic affairs.

Familiarize participants with the duties of those in leadership positions, including government, professional and volunteer roles.

Motivate participants to become involved and accept leadership roles within the community at their earliest possible opportunity.

Provide continuity through the establishment of a Leadership Alumni program.

HORATIO ELEMENTARY HAVE DANCING WITH STARS DVDS FOR SALE NOW

The Horatio Elementary School has “Dancing with the Stars” DVD’s for sale.  The DVDs include all three nights of competition and are one sale for $10 each.  To place an order, call 870-832-2891.  All proceeds will go to the Relay for Life. 

DE QUEEN AARP CHAPTER 2078 TO MEET 1ST MONDAY OF MONTH              MONDAYS

The De Queen AARP Chapter 2078 is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all in the community as we age.  The chapter offers service through informative and entertaining programs, and involvement in community activities.  It serves as a resource for helping seniors age with dignity and purpose.  De Queen AARP serves Sevier County and surrounding area.  Meetings are held the first Monday of every month at the Senior Citizens Center in Herman Dierks Park at 6 p.m.

PLAY NIGHT AT SEVIER COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS            SATURDAYS

WEIGHT WATCHERS MEETINGS IN DE QUEEN AND FOREMAN          MONDAYS & TUESDAYS

Weight Watchers will now meet in both De Queen and Foreman. De Queen meetings will be held every Monday night at the Catholic Church Hall located at 502 De Queen Ave.  Weigh in will be at 5 p.m. and the meeting starts at 5:30.  In Foreman, the meetings will be held at the Foreman Elementary School Cafeteria each Tuesday.  Weigh in is at 5:30 and the meeting starts at 6. 

DILWORTH CUMBERLAND CHURCH GOSPEL SINGING                      2nd FRIDAY

The Dilworth Cumberland Presbyterian Church on the curve of Red Bridge Road and Stringtown Road is having their Second Friday Night Gospel Singing and Potluck the second Friday of each month.  Potluck begins at 6 p.m. and singing starts at 7 p.m.  Everyone is invited to attend and participate.  For more information, call Pastor Byron Sullivan at 870-784-1293.

AMERICAN RED CROSS TO OFFER BASIC AND INSTRUCTOR CLASSES

The American Red Cross at 821 Spruce Street in Texarkana, TX is offering basic and instructor level classes in the following: Adult CPR, infant/child CPR, First Aid and more.  For a schedule or more information call 903-793-5602.

UNITED BLOOD SERVICES WANTS YOUR BLOOD  

The United Blood Services has announced an emergency appeal for all blood types.  United Blood Services is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is located at 1321 College Drive in Texarkana.

With the summer upon us, United Blood services has seen fewer donors due to vacations and other commitments, while area patients and hospitals still need blood.  The drastic decrease in donors puts a strain on the community blood supply. The United Blood Services is a non profit community blood provider.

PLEASANT MANOR NURSING HOME BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS  EVERY WEDNESDAY

Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Ashdown is offering free blood pressure checks every Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. till 11 a.m. with free coffee and donuts.  The nursing home is located at 950 Homestead in Ashdown.

KARAOKE NIGHT AT ASHDOWN EVERY FRIDAY & SATURDAY

DIERKS BASS CLUB TOURNAMENTS UNDERWAY EVERY TUESDAY

The Dierks Bass Club has started their Tuesday night bass tournaments, which will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Tuesday. The tournaments start from the first boat ramp at Jefferson Ridge on Dierks Lake. Everyone is invited to participate. For more information, call 286-2441.

MENA MS GROUP MEETS FIRST SATURDAY

The local Social Security office in Texarkana has moved to a new location at 5735 Summerhill Road in Texarkana, TX, one mile north of I-30 and next door to Northside Assembly of God Church and will open for business on Wednesday, March 1st.  The office hours and telephone numbers will remain the same.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP.............meets 2nd Wednesday each month

A caregiver support group, sponsored in part by the Southwest Arkansas Area Agency on Aging, has monthly meetings in Texarkana.

Nancy Bailey, of the Agency on Aging office in Magnolia, says the group meets at 1:30 PM, the second Wednesday of each month at Brentwood Outreach located at 3418 Richmond Road. Bailey says the support group teaches caregivers how to maximize their own well being and how to deal with the stress of caring for others.

NAMI-SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS CHAPTER........................meets 3rd Thursday each month

The Southwest Arkansas Chapter of the National Association for Mental Illness meets at 6:30 PM the 3rd Thursday each month.  The NAMI-Southwest Arkansas Chapter meets at the fellowship hall of the De Queen 1st Presbyterian Church at 5th Street and Vandervoort Avenue. 

NAMI is a support group for those diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses or their families.  Each meeting is open to the public and includes group discussion and support, sharing and informational programs.  Information is available by calling Carolyn Formby at 870-582-4298.

ARK. DEPT. OF HEALTH HOSPICE BEGINS GRIEF SUPPORT SESSIONS…..each 4th Tuesday

The Arkansas Department of Health Hospice is expanding its grief and bereavement services to anyone who has lost a loved one.

The hospice has a meeting the 4th Tuesday each month in De Queen.  The sessions are free and about recovery--they’re not a social function.  The meetings are to help people recover from the loss of a loved one, whether recently or in the past.  Grief and bereavement should not always be avoided or hurried.  Those wanting to talk to people who care and want to help are invited to the meetings at 6:00 PM, the 4th Tuesday each month, at the annex of the 1st Presbyterian Church, 315 North 5th Street in De Queen.
